President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his allies in ZANU PF are again working on a new plan to stay in power beyond his second term, which ends in 2028. Even though the noise about who will take over in 2030 has gone quiet, the real fight is still going on behind closed doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mnangagwa\u2019s friends in the party are preparing to push another resolution at the next ZANU PF conference in Mutare, which will run from 13 to 18 October. This time, they want the constitution to be changed to allow Mnangagwa to stay in power until 2030 or even longer. This comes after they succeeded in passing a resolution last year at the Bulawayo conference, giving him the option to extend his rule to 2030. Now they want to go one step further and make sure the law is changed to support that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before the politburo meeting on 2 July, the party gave Patrick Chinamasa and Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi the job of finding ways to turn the 2023 resolution into law. Even though Chinamasa was first against the idea, he now supports it because he is close to businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei, who also wants more power inside the party. Tagwirei is aiming for a seat in the Central Committee, and he is one of Mnangagwa\u2019s strongest supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even though Mnangagwa claims he does not want to go beyond his two terms, his allies are clearly doing everything they can to help him stay. They act like they are doing it on their own, but they would not be doing it without his silent support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The strangest part is that Mnangagwa came to power through a coup in 2017, and now he is trying to stop Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, the very person who helped him rise to power, from taking over. Mnangagwa now wants to hand over power to someone else he chooses, not Chiwenga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe recently told the media that there will be no elections in 2028. He says elections will only happen in 2030, and that the Mutare conference will make sure the constitution is changed to make this happen. But the constitution of Zimbabwe clearly says elections must be held every five years. Delaying elections is unconstitutional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Garwe also said all ten ZANU PF provinces will support the idea to push elections to 2030. It\u2019s clear that ZANU PF is trying to avoid a national vote on changing presidential term limits. They are scared of a referendum because people might vote against Mnangagwa and the party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead of changing term limits directly, which needs a public vote, they want to use Parliament to delay elections. But many legal experts say this is a clear attack on the constitution. It is like another silent coup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This whole plan will be discussed at the Mutare conference at the Polytechnic College. Mnangagwa\u2019s inner circle is working hard to make sure he continues as party leader and president beyond 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even though Mnangagwa keeps saying he will follow the constitution, the actions of his team say something very different. His supporters say they want him to stay because of his \u201cGod-ordained vision\u201d for 2030 and beyond. But the truth is, they are afraid of losing power. They fear what could happen if Chiwenga takes over or if a new election brings someone new into State House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is not about the people. It is not about progress. It is about greed, fear, and the hunger for power. ZANU PF leaders want to change the rules so they can keep eating while the people continue to suffer. The voices calling for Mnangagwa to step down when his term ends must get louder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
