ZANU PF POWER STRUGGLE OVER MNANGAGWA THIRD TERM

The battle inside Zanu PF is now very clear. President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his loyal people want him to stay in power until 2030. Ten Zanu PF provinces have already agreed with the idea. They say it is time to make real the resolution that came from the Bulawayo conference last year. That conference decided that Mnangagwa must go beyond the normal two term limit. The Constitution of Zimbabwe says only two terms are allowed, which ends in 2028. But the party now wants him to rule until 2030. This will mean Mnangagwa will be going for a third term in power, even though the law does not allow it.

The next big meeting will be in Mutare, where Zanu PF will hold its annual convention. The biggest question is what will happen there. Will the resolution be pushed through without any challenge? Or will there be strong voices from inside the party who refuse? This is where Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga comes in. He is the man many people see as the natural successor after Mnangagwa. But if Mnangagwa is allowed to extend until 2030, then Chiwenga’s chances are pushed further away.

Chiwenga now faces his biggest challenge yet. He must choose if he will agree with the extension, if he will keep quiet and watch, or if he will reject it completely. Each choice is dangerous for him. If he accepts, he will look weak and lose respect from his camp. If he keeps quiet, he will still look powerless. If he rejects, he risks open war with Mnangagwa and his loyalists.

The power struggle has been building for a long time. Mnangagwa has been working to secure his grip on the party, while Chiwenga has been waiting for his time to take over. Many in Zanu PF thought 2028 would be the year of change, but now that is being taken away. The decision from the provinces shows how much Mnangagwa has tightened his control. It also shows how he has managed to win support from structures that should have been neutral in the succession question.

For the people of Zimbabwe, this is another sad story. The fight is not about the economy, not about jobs, not about healthcare, and not about the suffering of millions. It is about two men and their hunger for power. While the citizens are crying for bread and freedom, the leaders are busy fighting over who will sit on the throne. This shows how disconnected Zanu PF has become from the lives of ordinary people.

Many activists and observers say the push for 2030 is illegal and dangerous. It will destroy any remaining respect for the Constitution. It will make Zimbabwe more of a dictatorship than it already is. It will also create more division inside the party, which could later spill into the streets. The truth is, Mnangagwa does not want to leave power, and Chiwenga wants his turn. This kind of fight has destroyed many African nations before, and Zimbabwe is walking down the same road again.

As we wait for the Mutare convention, all eyes are on Chiwenga. Will he betray his ambitions and bow down to Mnangagwa? Or will he stand up and risk it all? Whatever happens, the people of Zimbabwe must know one thing: this fight is not for them. It is not about progress or democracy. It is about greed. It is about power for a small group at the top, while the rest of the nation sinks deeper into poverty and hopelessness.
